Start at the heart of Chongqing. The Liberation Monument is the city's most iconic landmark, surrounded by towering skyscrapers and bustling shopping streets. This pedestrian zone is perfect for getting your bearings in the city.
Chongqing's terrain is unlike any other Chinese city — you might enter a building on the 1st floor and exit on the 10th. GPS can be unreliable due to elevation changes. Use Amap (Gaode) instead of Google Maps, and don't be surprised if a 'street' turns out to be a rooftop. Embrace getting lost!
Try Chongqing's iconic street food — xiaomian (small noodles). These spicy, numbing noodles are the breakfast and lunch of choice for locals. Find a tiny shop near Jiefangbei with long queues — that's your sign it's good. Order 'er liang' (small portion) for a taster.
Visit the excellent Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum opposite People's Assembly Hall. Free entry with passport. The exhibits cover the Three Gorges Dam project, Ba-Yu culture, and wartime Chongqing. The IMAX film about the Yangtze is worth watching.
Step outside to admire this magnificent building inspired by the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The grand plaza in front is a favorite gathering spot for locals. The Hall's architecture is a stunning blend of Chinese and Western styles.
The highlight of any Chongqing trip. This 11-story stilted building complex clings to the cliff between the road above and the river below, and lights up spectacularly after dark. Enter from the top (street level) and work your way down through shops and restaurants. The view from across the river at Qianximen Bridge is the most iconic photo spot.
