The Great Wall stretches over 21,000 km, but most visitors head to sections near Beijing. Each one offers a very different experience. Here's how to choose.

Badaling — The Convenient Classic

  • Distance from Beijing: 70 km (1.5 hours by bus)
  • Difficulty: Easy — fully restored, paved walkways
  • Best for: First-time visitors, families with young kids, anyone short on time
  • Downsides: The most crowded section by far. On holidays, it's shoulder-to-shoulder.
  • Getting there: Direct bus 877 from Deshengmen (12 RMB) or the S2 train from Beijing North Station.
  • Tip: Go on a weekday and arrive before 9 AM to beat the tour groups.

Mutianyu — The Best All-Rounder

  • Distance from Beijing: 73 km (1.5–2 hours by car)
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate — well-restored with cable car and toboggan options
  • Best for: Families, photographers, anyone wanting a great experience without extreme crowds
  • Highlights: Dense watchtowers, beautiful forest setting, fewer tour groups than Badaling
  • Getting there: Bus 916 Express to Huairou, then local bus or taxi. Or book a private car.
  • Tip: Take the cable car up and the toboggan down — it's a blast and saves your knees.

Jinshanling — The Hiker's Dream

  • Distance from Beijing: 130 km (2.5 hours by car)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging — partially restored, some steep sections
  • Best for: Serious hikers, photographers seeking dramatic shots, anyone wanting solitude
  • Highlights: The classic Jinshanling-to-Simatai hike (10 km, 4–5 hours) is legendary. Stunning sunrise and sunset views.
  • Getting there: Tourist bus from Wangjing West subway station, or private car.
  • Tip: Bring plenty of water and good hiking shoes. There are few facilities on the wall itself.

Huanghuacheng — The Wild Card

  • Distance from Beijing: 80 km (2 hours by car)
  • Difficulty: Moderate — partially submerged in a reservoir, un-restored sections
  • Best for: Adventurous travelers, those who've done the popular sections before
  • Highlights: The "Lakeside Great Wall" where the wall disappears into water. Surreal and beautiful.

Practical Tips for All Sections

  • Wear proper shoes — even "easy" sections have uneven stone steps.
  • Bring sun protection — there's almost no shade on the wall.
  • Start early — morning light is best for photos and crowds are thinnest.
  • Budget: Entry tickets range from 40–65 RMB. Cable cars are extra (100–140 RMB round trip).
  • Avoid national holidays (Oct 1–7, May 1–5, Chinese New Year) at all costs.
