Chengdu Panda Base: Visitor's Guide
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the world's premier facility for panda conservation and one of Sichuan's most visited attractions.
Getting There
The base is about 10 km north of downtown Chengdu. Take the Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue station, then bus 198 to the gate. Taxis cost around 30-50 RMB from the city center. Alternatively, book a Didi — much cheaper than tourist shuttles.
When to Go
- Arrive before 8:00 AM — pandas are most active during morning feeding time
- Avoid holidays (National Day Oct 1-7, Spring Festival) — crowds can exceed 80,000 visitors per day
- Best months: March-May and September-November for comfortable weather
- Rainy days are actually great — fewer tourists, and pandas love cool weather
The Route
- Start with the nursery (if open) — baby pandas are the highlight, and the line gets long fast
- Giant Panda Enclosures — the outdoor areas near Moon Pavilion are best before 10 AM
- Red Panda area — often overlooked but delightful; they're more active than giant pandas
- Swan Lake path — peaceful walking route to avoid crowds
- Panda Kitchen — watch keepers prepare bamboo meals (around 9:30 AM)
Tips for the Best Experience
- Buy tickets online in advance via the official WeChat mini-program
- Bring a zoom lens or binoculars — some enclosures have viewing distance
- No flash photography — it disturbs the animals
- The base is large (247 acres) — wear comfortable walking shoes
- Pack snacks and water — on-site food options are limited and overpriced
What Most Tourists Miss
The Panda Moon Viewing Pavilion offers the closest unobstructed views. Most tour groups skip it because it's uphill. Also explore the bamboo forest trails in the northern section — you might spot pandas that aren't behind glass.
