China Visa Guide 2025
China's visa policy has become significantly more open in recent years. Here's what you need to know as of 2025.
Visa-Free Entry (No Visa Needed)
144-Hour Transit Visa-Free — Citizens of 54 countries can enter China visa-free for up to 144 hours (6 days) when transiting through designated cities. Key requirements:
- You must have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country (not your origin country)
- Entry and exit through designated ports (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and others)
- You must stay within the permitted area (varies by entry city — Shanghai allows Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces too)
Unilateral Visa-Free — As of 2025, citizens of many countries including France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Malaysia, Singapore, and others can enter China visa-free for 15-30 days with no transit requirement. Check if your country qualifies.
Tourist Visa (L Visa)
If visa-free doesn't apply to you:
- Single entry: Valid for 3 months, allows 30-day stay
- Double entry: Valid for 6 months
- 10-year multiple entry: Available for US citizens (reciprocal arrangement)
- Apply at your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate, or use an authorized visa agency
- Processing typically takes 4-7 business days; express service available at higher cost
Required Documents
- Passport valid for 6+ months with blank pages
- Completed visa application form with recent photo
- Round-trip flight booking (or itinerary)
- Hotel reservation for at least the first few nights
- Bank statement showing sufficient funds (varies by consulate)
- Travel itinerary — a brief outline of your planned activities
Important Notes
- VPN: Download and set up a VPN before arriving — Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and most Western social media are blocked
- Registration: You must register with local police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels do this automatically; if staying with friends, visit the local police station
- Overstaying: Penalties are strict — 500 RMB per day, up to 10,000 RMB, plus potential detention and entry ban
Pro Tips
- Apply for your visa at least 1 month before travel
- The 144-hour transit visa-free is the easiest option if your itinerary allows it
- Keep a printed copy of your visa and hotel bookings — some hotels still ask for paper documents
- Save the emergency number: 12367 (immigration hotline)
