West Lake: Beyond the Postcard

West Lake is Hangzhou's crown jewel and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the iconic Broken Bridge and Three Pools Mirroring the Moon draw millions, the real magic is in the quieter corners.

The Classic Circuit

The lake is roughly 15 km around. Walking the full loop takes 3-4 hours, but biking is the best way to cover it.

  • Broken Bridge (断桥) — Best at sunrise or on misty mornings. The "broken" effect comes from snow melting unevenly in winter.
  • Su Causeway (苏堤) — A 2.8 km tree-lined path across the lake. Gorgeous in spring when willows and peach blossoms bloom.
  • Leifeng Pagoda (雷峰塔) — Rebuilt in 2002 with an elevator inside. Sunset views from the top are spectacular.
  • Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月) — Take a boat (55 RMB includes island entry) for the classic postcard view.

Hidden Gems Most Tourists Miss

  • Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺) — One of China's oldest Buddhist temples, nestled in lush forest. The rock carvings at nearby Feilai Feng are 1,000+ years old.
  • Longjing Village (龙井村) — A 20-minute taxi ride from the lake. Walk through tea plantations and taste Longjing green tea at a farmer's home.
  • Nine Creeks and Eighteen Gullies (九溪十八涧) — A stunning hiking trail through bamboo groves and clear streams. Virtually tourist-free on weekdays.
  • Baochu Pagoda (保俶塔) — Short hike up Precious Stone Hill for the best panoramic view of the entire lake.

Getting Around

  • Shared bikes: Scan a Hellobike or Meituan bike with Alipay — 1.5 RMB per 15 minutes
  • Electric boats: Rent at multiple docks around the lake (150 RMB/hour)
  • Walking: The eastern shore is the most walkable and well-lit at night
  • Bus: Lines K7, 51, and 52 loop around the lake

Best Times

  • March-April: Cherry and peach blossoms
  • June: Lotus flowers in full bloom (best at Quyuan Garden)
  • October: Osmanthus fragrance fills the air — unique to Hangzhou
  • Winter: Misty, moody atmosphere; far fewer tourists

Practical Tips

  • Free entry to the lake area (Leifeng Pagoda and boat rides cost extra)
  • Impression West Lake — Zhang Yimou's outdoor water show runs March-November, 300-680 RMB. Book in advance.
  • The Hefang Street night market is 10 minutes walk from the lake — good for snacks and souvenirs
  • Bring mosquito repellent in summer
