Why Alipay Matters
Cash is almost obsolete in China. From convenience stores to street vendors, mobile payment is king. Alipay is accepted virtually everywhere.
How to Set It Up
- Download Alipay from your app store before you fly
- Register with your passport and phone number
- Go to "Tour Pass" — this is the foreigner-friendly mode
- Link a Visa, Mastercard, or JCB card
- You're ready to pay by scanning QR codes
Pro Tips
- Load a small amount first (500-1000 RMB) to test it works
- The exchange rate in Alipay is usually competitive
- You can also use Alipay to pay for metro rides, bike rentals, and utility bills
- Enable face recognition for faster payments
- Keep your phone charged — a dead phone means no wallet
What If It Doesn't Work?
Some older vendors might only show a WeChat QR code. In that case, politely ask if they accept Alipay (支付宝可以吗?). Most will have both options available.
Bottom line: Set up Alipay before you board your flight. It's the single most important app for visiting China.
