Kunming 3-Day First Timer Itinerary
Welcome to the Spring City! Kunming enjoys year-round mild weather and serves as the gateway to Yunnan's incredible diversity. This three-day itinerary covers the must-see highlights for first-time visitors: the otherworldly Stone Forest, the serene Green Lake Park, the rich collections of the Yunnan Provincial Museum, and the vibrant Dounan Flower Market. You will also taste cross-bridge noodles and explore the charming Kunming Old Street, getting a thorough introduction to this underrated Chinese city.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Green Lake Park (Cuihu Park)
Start your Kunming trip at this beloved urban park in the heart of the city. Locals gather here every morning for tai chi, dancing, and card games. From November to March, thousands of black-headed gulls migrate here from Siberia, creating a stunning spectacle. Walk along the willow-lined causeways and enjoy the relaxed Spring City atmosphere.
Yunnan University Campus Walk
Walk south from Green Lake to Yunnan University's historic campus. The main gate leads to a beautiful tree-lined avenue of French plane trees. The Huize Building at the top of the hill is a stunning piece of 1920s architecture. In autumn the ginkgo-lined paths turn golden — one of Kunming's most photographed scenes.
Cross-Bridge Noodles Lunch
Try Kunming's most iconic dish: cross-bridge rice noodles (过桥米线). A bowl of piping-hot broth arrives with separate plates of raw meat, vegetables, and rice noodles. You add the ingredients yourself and they cook in the broth. Bridge Fragrance Garden (桥香园) near the university is a popular local chain for this dish.
Yunnan Provincial Museum
Spend the afternoon at Yunnan's finest museum. The highlights include the bronze artifacts from the ancient Dian Kingdom (2,000+ years old), the stunning ethnic minority costume gallery showcasing all 25 of Yunnan's ethnic groups, and the biodiversity hall. The museum is modern, spacious, and free. English signage is available throughout.
Kunming Old Street (Wenming Street area)
Head back to the city center to explore Kunming Old Street. This restored historical district blends Qing dynasty architecture with hip cafes, local boutiques, and Yunnan craft shops. The Wenming Street and Qingyun Street areas have traditional courtyard buildings and a laid-back atmosphere for browsing.
Yunnan Wild Mushroom Hotpot Dinner
End your first day with Yunnan's famous mushroom hotpot. Dozens of wild mushroom varieties — porcini, matsutake, chanterelles — are cooked in a rich chicken broth. Restaurants along Guanshang area specialize in this. Try the dipping sauce with fresh chili and mint. A uniquely Yunnan experience you cannot get anywhere else.
