Kunming 3-Day First Timer Itinerary

Start your Kunming trip at this beloved urban park in the heart of the city. Locals gather here every morning for tai chi, dancing, and card games. From November to March, thousands of black-headed gulls migrate here from Siberia, creating a stunning spectacle. Walk along the willow-lined causeways and enjoy the relaxed Spring City atmosphere.

Walk south from Green Lake to Yunnan University's historic campus. The main gate leads to a beautiful tree-lined avenue of French plane trees. The Huize Building at the top of the hill is a stunning piece of 1920s architecture. In autumn the ginkgo-lined paths turn golden — one of Kunming's most photographed scenes.

Spend the afternoon at Yunnan's finest museum. The highlights include the bronze artifacts from the ancient Dian Kingdom (2,000+ years old), the stunning ethnic minority costume gallery showcasing all 25 of Yunnan's ethnic groups, and the biodiversity hall. The museum is modern, spacious, and free. English signage is available throughout.

Head back to the city center to explore Kunming Old Street. This restored historical district blends Qing dynasty architecture with hip cafes, local boutiques, and Yunnan craft shops. The Wenming Street and Qingyun Street areas have traditional courtyard buildings and a laid-back atmosphere for browsing.
