Kunming 5-Day First Timer Itinerary

Begin your five-day Kunming adventure at the city's most beloved park. Green Lake is surrounded by weeping willows and filled with morning activity — tai chi practitioners, dancing groups, and bird enthusiasts. From November to March, thousands of Siberian seagulls descend on the lake, creating one of Kunming's most iconic scenes.

Stroll through the tree-lined avenues of Yunnan University's historic campus, just south of Green Lake. The French plane tree boulevard and the 1920s Huize Building are architectural highlights. In autumn, the ginkgo path turns golden. The campus has a peaceful, scholarly atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the busy city outside.

The Yunnan Provincial Museum is one of China's best regional museums and essential for understanding Yunnan before exploring further. Key galleries include the ancient Dian Kingdom bronze artifacts, the ethnic minority costume hall (25 groups!), and the Yunnan biodiversity exhibit. Free admission, modern building, and good English signage throughout.

Return to the city center to explore Kunming Old Street. This restored Qing dynasty district has tea shops, cafes, and local craft boutiques. Stop at a Jiahua bakery to try the famous rose flower cakes (鲜花饼) — flaky pastries filled with fresh rose petals that are Kunming's signature souvenir. The evening atmosphere on the old streets is charming.
